If you’re looking for something a little bit different when it comes to a portrait of your child then take note of this post! Lorna Freytag not only photographs your child beautifully but she also creates a wonderful world for them to exist in. Originally from Edinburgh, Lorna has worked as a children’s photographer in New York, Dubai, London and Sydney. She is inspired by dark forests, magical landscapes and old fairytales and, using her imagination and digital skills, can create a fantastic fantasy image of your loved little ones.
How it works
I asked Lorna to provide a little info on the process involved with her pieces of artwork…
After discussing any thoughts and ideas you may have for your child’s portrait, and browsing my portfolio or website showing examples of the available backgrounds, I will provide you with a detailed quote for your particular background choice. For a bespoke image I will produce some sketched proposals along with the quote and timescale. If you decide to go ahead with one of my proposals we will then set a date for the portrait session.
The portrait session itself normally takes 2-3 hours depending on your child’s mood but I am happy to work longer if necessary to get the perfect shot and I can work around naps or meal times. I currently work from a photographic studio in SW London and in Edinburgh and photograph the children against a white background which I set up in the studio. They are welcome to bring along their favourite music to make the shoot more relaxing and fun. Depending on the background/theme of your picture I will be happy to advise on clothing choices and it is good to have a selection at hand.
A few days after the shoot I will edit the pictures and you will be emailed 10-15 of the best ones to pick from (at this stage they are still against a white background). Your chosen image will then be retouched into the background and your childs portrait will be ready approximately 3 weeks later. The results And here are some of the incredible images she has created in the past:

I adore Lorna’s work. It perfectly portrays what it is to be a child. Children will often be dreaming up worlds very like the ones Lorna creates and so her work is a beautiful insight into a child’s imagination. Commissioning a new background creation from Lorna is an excellent chance to get older children involved in the piece too. Ask them what their favourite fairytale is, their favourite animal or what they would like to be when they grow up and you will have a piece of artwork that, in years to come, you can look back on and not only remember what your child looked like but also who they were.
